Skill
-
Definition - The learned ability to bring about predetermined results with maximum certainty, often with the minimum outlay of time or energy, or both
Environmental Influence
Open skills are unpredictable, change regularly, affected by environment, require large amount of information to be considered
Closed skills not affected by environment, predominantly habitual. Movement has set pattern, definite beginning and end, consistent performance & few decisions
Muscular involvement
-
Gross skills involve large muscle movements
and are explosive skills that require large muscular contractions
Pacing
Self paced skills are where the performer is in control over start and rate of action and are not governed by actions of others
Externally paced skills are where the performer has no control over when start or how fast to perform a skill because the skill is being controlled by opponents or conditions
Difficulty
Simple skills require few decisions when being performed
and there is not a lot to think about when performing like a forward roll in gymnastics
Complex skills require decision making, using lots of information when performed. Like dribbling in hockey needs to think about opponents, team mates and stick control
