Symptoms and characteristics
Denial of hunger.
Intense or irrational fear of becoming overweight.
Abnormal weight loss
Fatigue, insomnia, dizziness or fainting, hair loss, and discoloration of the fingers are other symptoms.
Statistics
Anorexia is MAINLY found in females.
Ten million women.
One million men.
86% report onset of illness by the age of 20.
The highest percentage of people report duration from 1-15 years.
6% of serious cases of anorexia die from the disease.
Only 50% of people with anorexia report being successfully treated.
Risk factors
Unhealthy eating behaviors or an unhealthy relationship with food.
Abuse or trauma.
Low self esteem; body image dissatisfication.
Behavorial inflexibility.
Diagnostic criteria
Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though they may be underweight already.
Denial of the seriousness of the weight loss.
Disturbance in the way in which one's body weight or shape is experienced
Treatment
Hospitalization: either in-patient or out-patient care
Special diet
Talk therapy for help with self esteem.
