Feminist Theology*
BOTH
recognise society as patriarchal and with sexist hierarchical structures. An androcentric society that is present in Christian teachings, beliefs and history.
see humanity as androgynous - nothing should mean women aren't capable of the same roles as men
DALY
radical and extreme in her views - saw women's capacities as "infinitely diminished" under patriarchy
Sexual Caste system
the church has a sexual hierarchy / class system that is deeply rooted and entrenched in the church
Verb not noun
God has often been used as a noun, a static thing. Women seen as objects
believe women should refer to God as a verb, something that is progressing - inspiring and mobile - encourages change
God-Man
creating too much of an idol over the God figure - attachment to the male figure as something to worship - missing the essence of God. idolisation that doesn't inspire
Perceptions of women -- virgin vs whore
Mary Magdalene + Virgin Mary
Mary Magdalene depicted in a fleshy sense, with emphasis on her physical beauty
sees the Virgin Mary as a victim of rape, shouldn't be held as an example/role model - she's a vulnerable woman
Unholy Trinity
the church is responsible for the unholy trinity of rape, genicide and war which perpetuates male violence
rape is beneficial to men as a feature of society as it perpetuates male power, keeping women in fearful, submissive roles
Christolatry and Bibiolatry
Anti-church -- sisterhood
believes the church can't be reformed so women should form an anti-church
RUETHER
androcentric
- the Church centres around men; her evidence for this comes from her study of the Bible, church history and theology
approximately 49 named women in the Bible
women have been largely written out of church history - written by men for men
Aristotle
- women are "misbegotten males"
Aquinas
sees women as inferior to men
Prophetic tradition
prophets challenged the authorities and represented the marginalised e.g. Jesus sitting and eating with women
Androgynous
believes humans are born androgynous - not defined by gender - socialised into gender stereotypes
Mary Vs Eve
Mary accepts her pregnancy - submissive, her body as a vehicle, mothering
Eve is a temptress, nerve to be sexual, desires Adam, sinful
women encouraged to be submissive like Mary and not encouraged to demand equality; if they do, they are criticised for being like Eve
Marginalised Christianity
Montinism, Gnostics, Quakers and Shakers have historically treated women equally
Marxists, romantics (social groups who tried to reform)
Base communities
moderate feminist
believes women should form these base communities and fight for reform in the church
