Compare the processes of spermatogenesis and oogenesis
When does it occur?
Spermatogenesis
The process of spermatogenesis never ends. It starts when males hit puberty and sperm is continually produced from that point on.
Oogenesis
The process of Oogenesis ends when a women hits menopause. Oogenesis occurs in different stages and ova are released monthly starting at puberty. The ova's are all created when it is a fetus.
What are the differences in products?
Spermatogenesis
Four gametes are produced at a time. The size of these sperm are much smaller in comparison to an ova.
Oogenesis
For each cycle only one ova is produced. Along side this 2 or 3 polar bodies are produced as well. Ova's are much larger in comparison to sperm.
Total Process
Spermatogenesis
Location
The cells divide equally.
Number of meiotic divisions
Occurs in the testes.
Is Germ line epithelium involved?
It is involved in the production of the gametes
Oogenesis
Number of meiotic divisions
The cytoplasm is not evenly distributed.
Location
Primarily in the ovaries but sometimes in the ovaduct.
Is Germ line epithelium involved?
No it is not.
