EAR ABSCESS / FURUNCULOSIS
CLASSIFICATION
This is ear infection that usually occurs following infection of the hair follicle.
It is localized in the ear canal where the hair follicles are located.
The form of abscess may be managed by surgical incision.
This can also lead to loss of hearing.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Patient may present with severe pain in the ear.
Abscess may be present resulting from the infection of the hair follicle.
Patient may lose hearing due to abscess in the ear canal.
Swelling of the ear and drainage may be seen from the patient's ear.
Pain, tenderness or pulling of the ear may be felt by the patient resulting from the infection of the ear canal.
Serous drainage may be seen from the patient.
MANAGEMENT
Management should focus on removing or draining the abscess from the ear of the patient.
Surgical incision to drain the abscess may be done followed by aseptic wound care to prevent further infection to the ear of the patient.
Antibiotics should be given to the patient to minimize the bacteria or any causative agent causing the inflammation of the ear canal.
The nurse should emphasize personal hygiene to the patient and cleaning of the ear canal using soft cotton.
Encourage patient to finish the course of the prescribed antibiotics. this will decrease the chances of developing further infection post-operation due to incision opened.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Skin lining the ear canal is being teared up of cut, resulting to the opening of the skin of infection.
The infection enters the skin through the cut of the skin resulting to the infection of the ear canal.
Ear canal becomes swollen, This may lead to pus occurring to the ear canal.
The infection gest further to the hair follicles resulting to the infection of the hair follicles of the ear.
The ear is pricked by the sharp organ such as matchstick.
