Ideological Basis
- long term Bolshevik aim was to abolish private enterprise

- the old world had been destroyed by WW1 and so this provided an opportunity to build anew on Marxist lines

- Collapse of currency replaced by bartering was seen as sign of the liberation from capitalism
- result was Bolshevik leadership into implementing large scale nationalisation
- June 1918 - nationalisation of industries w/ 10+ workers

Key features of WC
- Nationalisation of all industry
- industry under control of state through Supreme Council of National Economy in 1917
- Hierarchical structures in industry - workers' councils replaced by management to instil discipline
- Military style discipline in factories -
- death penalty for workers on strike
- unemployed forced to join labour armies
- all workers expected to volunteer for unpaid work on Communist Saturdays
- Private trading banned - trade controlled by state
- money replaced by bartering due to inflation
- forced requisitioning of food - taken from peasants to feed the army
- Rationing - ensure city workers were fed

Why was it introduced?
- Due to circumstance of Civil War - measures were introduced to ensure Red Army was supplied with enough food & resources
- measures entailed greater govern. intervention in economy → known as WAR COMMUNISM
