Stardust, Princess Kaguya, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Snow White
Evil: Evil in Snow White was either a symptom or a cause of narcissism it depends on whether the queen had been always evil or narcissistic. Either way the queen was fully evil and Snow White was fully good showing a clear distinction.
Unhappiness: In Snow White unhappiness was caused, for the queen, by her desire to be the fairest and thus her jealousy of Snow White; From the queens desire also spawned all other unhappiness in the story.
Selfishness & Selflessness: There was no truly selfless act in Snow White; even when Snow White cleaned the Dwarfs' house for the first time it was in the hopes of gaining a place to stay. There also wasn't any parts of the story where selfishness was in the forefront.
Goodness: Goodness in Snow White was a part of someone's nature as shown by Snow White she had a vindictive and narcissistic mother but she was good.
Mistakes: There was only one large mistake in Snow White. The mistake was when Snow White trusted a stranger and ate a poisoned apple.
Happiness: Happiness in Snow White was achieved for Snow White because of her innate goodness and was a product of love. She gained happiness with the Dwarfs because she helped them become proper and because she had a love interest.
Message: There was a few messages in Snow White 1. Its okay to assault a sleeping girl if it is true love 2. Don't trust strangers 3. Love can save you.
Nature: Nature is a positive and negative thing in Snow White, on one hand nature is what helped Snow White after she ran away but on the other a suspicious apple is what killed her, leaving a conflicted impression.
Style: The style of Snow White was cartoonish, as shown in the animals, giving the whole movie appeal to children and there was clear parts where the animation could have been improved.
Love: Love is a bit strange in Snow White, the savior of the story is love's first kiss but this kiss comes from someone that Snow White barely knows and when she is kissed she is in a coma, which to current viewers may be strange. Another kind of love in Snow White is parental love or the lack thereof; Snow White lacked a positive parental figure and thus her problems were caused.
Stardust
-
Unhappiness: Unhappiness in Stardust was shown by the witches and the princes. The witches were consumed by vanity and thus were killed for their attempts. The princes were unhappy because of their failed attempts to gain power and they were all killed for it.
Goodness: There was only two characters who were both good and bad; Tristain and Septimus. Tristain was a fool who kidnapped a girl but later made up with her and Septimus helped Tristain save Yvaine.
Selfishness & Selflessness: Although selfishness and greed can sometime be interchanged selfishness is not the root of unhappiness in Stardust as selfishness is the unwillingness to give power but greed, which killed the princes, is the search for more power.
Happiness: Happiness in Stardust was a direct consequence of finding true love, much like snow white, and in Cpt. Shakespeare's case, self love.
-
Nature: Nature was not a real focus of Stardust with the only unsteady conclusion that I can draw is that nature is to be exploited as shown by the thunder pirates and by the ending showing that even though a star was taken from the sky it ended well.
-
Love: Love in Stardust diverted from a typical folktale as it was not love at first sight, rather it was caused by the connection the two main characters had.
Style: The Style of Stardust was very much a classic fantasy story for young adults and is not very morally complicated
Princess Kaguya
Evil: There was no real evil, even though the Buddah took Kaguya away it was always the plan and she ended up "happy". As for the suitors they were not really evil just blinded by lust and in some cases they were liars.
Unhapiness: Unhappiness in Princess Kaguya stemmed from the progression of civilization as in the rudimentary village Kaguya was happy but in the city she was not.,
Selfishness & Selflessness: Selfishness is shown to a negative subject as shown by the father he believed that happiness come from material wealth and he was wrong.
-
Mistakes: Princess Kaguya made no mistakes however the largest mistake in the film was the fathers decision to move to the city.
Happiness: Happiness in Princess Kaguya was not achieved by material wealth, even though Kaguya was given lots of expensive gifts there was no happiness derived from them. The only source of happiness was nature.
Message: The main message of Princess Kaguya is that happiness is proportional to how connected humans are with nature.
Nature: Nature in Princess Kaguya as a source of happiness as shown by how she immediately got depression after she moved into the city and away from nature.
Style: The stye of Princess Kaguya is in a classic Japanese style with immaculate detail providing a beautiful medium for a interesting tale.
Love: Love was a large part of Princess Kaguya. Kaguya spent a decent portion of the movie rejecting men who came to her because of "love" (lust). In the end Kaguya never found love, instead her only love interest had a family without her.
