Pathophysiology
Hearing loss can be classified as conductive, sensorineural, or both (mixed loss). Conductive hearing loss occurs secondary to lesions in the external auditory canal, tympanic membrane, or middle ear. This lesions prevent sound from being effectively conducted to the inner ear.

Nursing care plan
Assessment
Assess for confusion state, disorientation, difficulty and slowing of mental ability, changes in behavior and emotional response.
Assess auditory acuity, cerumen in ears, responses to noise and affect on hearing, ability to communicate, difficulty in locating and identifying sounds
Determine type of hearing loss, ask for repeat of conversations frequently, inability to follow verbal verbal conversations.
Nursing diagnosis
Disturbed sensory perception related to normal physiological changes of aging as manifested by disorientation in time place or person, poor concentration, altered communication patterns.
