Definition
A blocked artery caused by a foreign body such as blood clot or air bubbles. The body tissues and organs need oxygen which is transported around the body in the bloodstream.
Pathophysiology
Occurs when deep venous thrombus detach and embolize to the pulmonary circulation. Pulmonary vascular occlusion occurs and impairs gas exchange and circulation. In the lungs, the lower lobes are more frequently affected than the upper, with balateral lung involvement being common.
