What is Secret societies like?
They are mostly poor and uneducated young men who had never been outside their hometown
In Singapore, the felt lonely so they befriended members of the Secret Societies
They enjoy the protection of the societies as a member(If you are sick, members of the societies will take care of them)
By the 1840s-several secret societies have thousands of members
What are some problems caused by them?
They took part in gang robberies, gang fights and some other forms of lawlessness
They would carry out armed robberies in broad daylight on homes of the rich
They are the cause of most of the riots that occured during 1840 to 1850
They fought for the territory and illegal vice-traders such as gambling and prostitution
Why wasn't it known before?
The British had few dealings with most Chinese Living in Singapore and knew very little about Secret Societies
The british officers do not understand the various Chinese dialects
The police offers were all British,Malays and Indians so they could not communicate
What did the British do?
Pickering is fluent in several Chinese Dialects and his personality gained the trust of the Chinese
He was able to find out what the secret societies was all about
All Chinese secret Societies had to register with the protectorate
The government also implemented that dangerous societies can immediately make them unlawful
They were given the power to abolish the any dangerous societies and banish the Chinese Immigrants
He persuaded the Chinese to settle their quarrels instead of joining secret societies
They worked with the leaders of the Chinese Secret societies to build trust between them
However occasional fight still happens
