Orbital cellulitis
Definition
Is an infection of the fat and muscles around the eye
It affects the eyelids, eyebrows and cheeks
It may become an abscess behind or around the eye on the bone
Causes
Complications of the sinus infection
Trauma of the eye
Infection if the year duct,teeth,ear, or face
From spread of periorbital cellulitis
Clinical manifestations
Limited eye movement and fever
Tenderness to touch around the eye
Swelling
Management
Redness
Pain
Proptosis
The patient must be admitted to hospital
An urgent CT scan is needed to confirm the presence of pus in the orbit and possible intercranial spread
IV antibiotics needed urgently
Surgical drainage of the orbit abscess may be required
If not treated urgently, the patient may go blind and even die
