COMPONENT 1
NEWSPAPERS :newspaper:
The Daily Mirror is owned by Reach PLC - big organisation - horizontally integrated - allows it to compete with other competing companies and allows it to share resources with newspapers such as The Daily Express which is also horizontally integrated.

Audience
Use of a song 'sunshine on a rainy day' from the 90s deliberately targets an audience in their 30s and us whilst we're cleaning in dobbies
-
Use of the Pound symbol, as well as a British voice on the radio and a rainy scene (semiotically connoting Britain) all target a British audience
-
The use of statistics suggests factuality and makes it seem like the audience can better trust the charity
Claudia is an incredibly relatable protagonist, and many audience members will hopefully be able to see themselves/ their children in it
Technology

The Times has a Paywall on their website which means the reader has to pay for a subscription before they’re allowed to read the content behind the paywall. The Times readers have demographics of ABC1 which means they have more money than readers of The Daily Mirror, making them more likely to afford to pay to read the newspaper website. It also creates an illusion of whatever is behind the paywall is better quality content since you have to pay for it.
The Daily Mirror has advertisements for betting, holidays etc. It is free to access so their readership online could be greater than print.
INTEGRATION!!!!
VERTICAL INTEGRATION - When a company takes over the stages of distribution/production of a product.
HORIZONTAL INTEGRATION - When a company acquires/merges with another company of the same business line.
- Companies might be horizontally integrated to buy out competing companies and stay powerful, like the Daily Mirror. Horizontal int. also diversifies products and expands the company in size.

- camera angles
- types of shots
- diegetic/non-diegetic sound
- genre
- pace/style
- Performance based videos generally focused on the appearance of the artist/band and dancing usually belong to the rock or pop music genre :dancers:
- Yet, they can still have narrative structures as well as just performance, especially pop or indie music videos. There are 2 types of narrative: Linear or fragmented - linear is a straight forward storyline - fragmented is the opposite but does still depict the lyrics :scroll:
- Long shot - emphasis on location
- mid shot - focuses on the subject from the waist up
- medium close-up - half way between mid shot and close up
- close up - shows the artists face
- extreme close up - extremely close to the face
Angle shots
- eye level
- high angle
- low angle
- Both newspapers are regulated by IPSO which controls what is and what can't be put onto the newspapers in terms of ethics and offensive language etc.
- Newspapers have computer generated ‘bot’ moderators for their online version which is GOOD because it takes a very short amount of time to moderate comment sections from the public but is BAD because the bots either completely miss inappropriate language or censor things which aren’t offensive at all. Human moderators would take a very long time to read all the comments.
- It doesn’t follow the recommendations of the Leveson enquiry.
-
-
- IPSO stands for INDEPENDENT PRESS STANDARDS ORG.

- men :man::skin-tone-2:- one knelt down and one stood up - both look like the victim here mostly, as the one stood up looks scared getting 'stabbed' by the 'V' acting as a stake. - The man knelt down looks vulnerable as he is towered over by the female vampire stood above him. Kind of sexualised with his shirt ripped at the top with chest on show
- women - :woman::skin-tone-2: possibly more powerful than the men seen by her facial expression, stance and her central position
- the woman knelt also looks like the vulnerable male victim, takes on a 'damsel in distress' persona.
- Van Zoonan theory - sexualisation of this woman with her exposed chest area and body shape clearly shown, skimpy dresses
- Livingston and Lunt: There is a struggle between our needs as citizens and our needs as consumers. Newspapers want to push interesting stories but also need to respect laws and ethics

Andrew Goodwin - All music videos are constructed by the links between the song, visuals and the artist
- George Gerbner - cultivation theory, over exposure of repeated patterns cultivates particular views and opinions. The 'overexposure' of WaterAid representing people in need as vulnerable and in suffering might actually bore an audience because we have seen this too much. We associate WaterAid now with sadness.
BUT Claudia Sings offers a happier representation of WaterAid which is more likely to engage an audience and improve their success rate. This ad is a different representation of the charity.
- bell hooks - black women are underrepresented in the media or just shown as the victims whilst the protagonists of any media product are mostly white men/women.
BUT this ad presents Claudia as the main character and her community is not only a fully black cast but doesn't represent them as the victims like usual WaterAid ads. Here they are singing and smiling.

- Curran and Seaton - Patterns of ownership and control are the most significant factors to how the media operate. Small companies with similar ideas coming together to create a product can limit creativity yet more diverse patterns of ownership can help make more varied and adventurous media products.
- Hesmondhalgh - large conglomerates are driven by profit and power. Companies usually copy successful existing formats to minimise risk and maximise profit.
- Vertically integrated companies control their own supply chain so they can avoid supply disruption, yet these companies must invest in a great deal of finance AKA 'capital' to set up/buy factories and maintain profit.
