Definition
Inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the larynx. Inflammation may involve the vocal cords. It can be acute or chronic and can be caused by viruses or bacteria .
Signs and symptoms
Change in your voice such as sounding hoarse
Severe cases difficulty in breathing
A long-lasting cough
Pain when swallowing or difficulty swallowing
Sore throat or earache
Causes
Workplace exposed to toxins
Heavy alcohol
Smoking for a long time
Poor nutrition
Diagnostic tests
Urine test
Laryngoscope
CT scan
Treatment
Surgery
Radiation therapy
Chemotherapy
Nursing care plan
Advise the patient to rest the voice and correct faulty voice habit
Increase fluid intake to prevent a cold from being dry
Take and complete antibiotics as prescribed
Use steam inhalations if ordered but doing this with extreme caution to prevent further throat in irritation
Cough medication and soothing throat lozenges as ordered
