Research questions: What factors impact children in the foster care system enrollment in post-high school education?
Qualitative methods
-
You want to uncover the factors because they haven't been defined. You'll use qualitative data to find trends
-
Mixed methods
You want to use descriptive statistics to describe the similiarities and difference from the groups, then you a qualitative analysis to report the 'stories and look for trends.
You use qual to uncover the factors, and use those a variables in in statistical analysis.
Research questions: R1 What are employment outcomes of adults previously part of the foster care system. R2 How did their education impact these outcomes.
Quant
:You can quantify preparedness, effecitiveness, opportunities and support based on a validated tool or measurement. Then distribute a survey.
You want to explore the relationship in a quatitative way between support systems and job satiisfaction/job opprortunities/work place effectiveness/employment preparedness and variables like age when entered foster care system, number of times rehomed, etc.
You can compare groups who have achieved positive employment outcomes vs those who didn't and compare based on some of the examples to the right (or other variables known to impact employment. Even more narrow, school related variables known to impact employment).
Mixed
You want to use descriptive statistics to describe the similiarities and difference from the groups, then you a qualitative analysis to report the 'stories and look for trends
Qual: You want to capture the stories or experiences of adults who were formerly in the foster care system and how their experience may or may not have impacted their employment success. Interviews (synchronous or asynchronous) can gather demographic data and ask openeded quesitions. Data analysis can look for trends, emerging variables that impacted employment outcomes.
Research question: How do adults formerly in the foster care system perceive the impact of foster care on their high school experience?
(You can refine this further by specifying adult formerly in the foster care system in Wisconsin)
Qual: You want to collect their 'stories' based on these variables (they would be the start of your interview protocol). The recruitment delimitation would simply be over 18 and in the foster care system
Quant (this works for both RQs): You could use a likert scale survey. That wouldn't be a very strong study (more like a Master's thesis). What would make it stronger is if you were able to correlate demographic data to the answers on the likert scale.
Does the age when children enter the foster system impact their experience in high school? (You could replace 'age' with another variable or set of variables. More than one variable in that spot will make the statistical approach much more complicated, but it is possible).
Qual: You use interviews to collect stories based on these variables, then analyze the data based on the age of when the participant entered forster care. Are there trends that you can pull from their stories?
