Porbandar, in North West India,
on 2nd October 1869, into a
Hindu family.
In 1883, when he was 13,
Gandhi married a girl also
aged 13 in an arranged
marriage.
In 1888 he went to London to study law.
From 1907 to 1915 he lived in South Africa.

When he returned to India he led non-violent campaigns to help

• Promote women’s rights
• End the fifth group of the caste system of Untouchables
• Gain independence from the British Empire.
With the Salt March Gandhi launched a civil disobedience movement.
He was arrested and sent to prison without a trial.

his 78 followers covered 250 miles in 24
days (12th March 5th April 1930) to reach
the sea and collect their own salt.
