Tonsils and adenoids

defination

these encircle the throat at the root of the nasopharynx, they are frequently common sites for infection

Pathophysiology

infection of the tonsils and adenoids may be secondary upper respiratory tract infection ,tonsills become oedematous and hyperaemic , a thin white membranes that peel awayeasily without bleeding forms over the tonsills . tonsils may enlarge resulting in adenoids which cause nasal obstruction and neck and cervical lymph node enlargement

Assessment and common findings

history of upper respiratory tract infection

Patient report throat pain

difficulty in swallowing

otalgia

fever and generalised malaise

reduced appetite because of blocked nasopharynx and pain in the throat

nursing management

Encourage the patient to rest

Increase fluid intake

Saline gargles

administer broad spectrum antibiotics as per doctors order

Surgical management

surgical removal of tonsils and adenoids, tonsilectomy

adenoidectomy

tonsileadenoidectomy

surgical procedure may be done as same day or outpatient procedure under general anaesthesia

health education

Encourage the patient to seek medical help if any bleeding occurs

let the patient know that delayed bleeding may occur when healing membranes separate usually 7-10 days
