1187 – Battle of Hattin – Saladin destroys Christian army, massacres Christian knights and re-captures Jerusalem

Three Christian rulers raise armies – Richard I of England, Phillip II of France and Frederick Barbarossa the Holy Roman Emperor
Richard I became King in 1189. He sells titles and raises a ‘Saladin Tax’. He leaves England in July 1190 very well prepared with 10,000 men

Richard and Phillip spent the winter of 1190 in Messina. Richard sacked the city in October and then went back on his promise to marry Phillips' sister. Richard and Phillip fall out.

July 1191 Richard captures Acre – a big strategic victory. Richard falls out with Leopold of Austria over the spoils of victory

Richard marches from Acre to Jaffa and show great military skill to stop Saladin’s army successfully attacking the Christian army (not engaging in cavalry battles)
Sept 1191 Richard defeats Saladin’s army at the Battle of Arsuf (great military leadership) and then captures Jaffa
Oct 1191 Richard decides not to march on Jerusalem – poor weather and concerned about how to hold on to it afterwards. Attacks and captures Ascalon instead
