Data Types
Integer
Real
String/Text
Boolean
Alphanumeric
Can be used for text and numbers, like telephone numbers
Whole numbers, used for anything to do with whole numbers
Can be used when it comes to decimal numbers
Used for writing and are characters like qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm
Used for simple Yes/No questions like True or Fake, Yes or No, etc.
Methods to collect data
Questionnaire
Consumer Panels
Surveys
Loyalty Schemes
Interviews
Sensors
Used to collect data while face-to-face and can be useful in the situation of a job or collecting data on a particular person
Multiple questions that can be used to gather data
Basically the same as the survey but without analysing the data
Gather data of customers/consumers to gain insight on customer/consumer habits and purchases.
Ways to attract customers so that they return to the company and gathers data on their purchases and habits
Used to automatically gain data about people entering an establishment or for other purposes (like speeding cars or thieves)
Uses of Data
Data can be used in many ways, like using it to recommend different products to different groups of people based on their habits or behaviour.
Data can also be used by companies for the stated purpose, for example using it in a database for employees or colleagues.
Big Data
Big Data is sets of data that would take too long to process normally. You can analyse patterns in Big Data to benefit your company and has many different uses. For example, Big Data can be used in this situation: A person enjoys watching a certain show. The Big Data can be analysed. This person will now be recommended shows that are similar to that show they enjoyed. This can also be applied to other people, by recommending shows that they enjoy.
Benefits and Drawbacks of using Data
Advantages
Disadvantages
The use of Data might attract hackers or people with malicious intent
If Data is not used for the specified purpose or is kept for too long, it can be considered a breach of the DPA.
Data that is collected may be outdated. If this is the case, the company collecting the data runs the risk of breaching the DPA.
Big Data can be used to easily increase the sales of your company if used correctly
Data collection is very easy, since it just requires interviews, survey, questionnaires, loyalty schemes or other data collection methods. These methods are very easy to do.
Data, if it is accurate and complies with the DPA, can now be used for many good purposes that can benefit the company that is using it.
IT technologies used to collect Data
Emails
Emails can be used to very easily collect the data of a client. This is because, using emails, you can send out surveys and questionnaires to your potential customers/clients. You could also communicate with them to organise an interview, which is another data collection method.
QR Codes
Barcodes
QR codes can be used to store data, which can then be scanned by phones to redirect the customer to information about the product or whatever they scanned. It can also be used to advertise a business.
Barcodes store data about a specific product. Members of a loyalty scheme can scan their products manually using Barcodes.
Wearable Technologies
Wearable Technology gathers information about the wearer using the technology. It can gather data about the client, such as their health or heart rate, which can be used to better manage their physical or mental wellbeing.
Law Enforcement, it can also be used in Law Enforcement to check who owns a vehicle for example. It could be used to help identify stolen vehicles.
Speed Cameras, speed cameras can detect the speed of an incoming object/vehicle, which can be used to identify potential law breakers.
CCTV, data can be used in CCTV monitoring to help identify criminals or view events.
