Conditions of the middle ear
Acute Otitis Media
Definition
Infection of the middle ear caused by bacteria or virus
Pathophysiology
Commonly proceeded by an upper respiratory tract infection
The eustachian tube is usually inflamed and blocked preventing fluid drainage from the middle ear.
Causes
Caused by various types of bacteria like streptococcus pneumoniae and haemophillis influenza
Infection usually related to respiratory tract infection or allergic reactions
Clinical manifestation
Swelling of the eustachian tube
Nursing management
Administration of prescribed medication
Administration of analgesia (paracetamol)
Administration of of prescribed antibiotics to clear the infection if there's any discharge
Chronic otitis media
Definition
Untreated acute Otitis media becomes chronic otitis media if the infection has not yet cleared and continues for more than 2 weeks
Causes
Recurrent acute Otitis media with increased virulence of infecting organisms
Pharyngeal congestion and lowered immune status
Tuberculosis
Hiv infection
