The American Eagle
1782: The Congress chose the bald eagle to be the official emblem of the USA. It symbolised beauty, strength and long life.
During a battle from the War of Independence, some eagles flew over the fighting men and they said that the eagles were calling for freedom.

Famous places
The Grand Canyon
It's one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. It is in Arizona and it's one of the biggest canyons in the world. In 1919 it became a national park.

Niagara Falls
They're 3 different falls: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Canadian Horseshoe Falls. They're the 2nd biggest waterfalls in the world. In 1960 a boy in a boat fell and went into the falls and survived.

Redwood Forests
This forests have got some of the biggest redwood and sequoia trees in the world.
A lot of those trees are more than 2.000 years old. They can absorb a lot of carbon dioxide. The tallest redwood tree is 115,5m high.

Death Valley
This valley is the hottest place in the USA and the lowest, driest place in North America. The hottest area of the valley had a recorded temperature of 56.7ºC in 1913.

Myths and legends
Bigfoot
Some legends say that in US forests and mountains there are tall, hairy apelike creatures.
In 1958, Jerry Crew found an enormous footprint in California and said that it was of 'old Bigfoot'.
In 1967, 2 men filmed a 'Bigfoot'.
After that , more people began to say that they had seen a 'Bigfoot'.

Johnny Appleseed was a man that walked thousands of km to plant apple trees in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Blackbeard's Ghost
In the 18th century, a pirate known as "Blackbeard" terrorised ships on the east coast of America by stealing things and sometimes killing people.
In 1718 some British soldiers fought him, killed him and threw his body into the sea.
