CHAPTER 5: FAMOUS PLACES

Is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World.
Is in the southwest of the USA (Arizon)

It is one of the biggest canyons in the world, at 446 km long and 29 km wide.
NIAGARA FALLS
There are on the frontier between the USA and Canada.
There are actually 3 different waterfalls.

Canadian Horseshoe Falls
There are the second biggest waterfalls in the world.
REDWOOD FORESTS
There are near the west coast of the USA.
These forests have got some of the biggest redwood and sequoia trees in the world. These trees are so old (some of them are more than 2000 years old).
People can drive their cars through the giant trees.
DEATH VALLEY
It is part of the Mojave Desert in California and it's the hottest place in the USA.
The rocks are intense reds, blues and greens because of different minerals.
This chapter talsks about qualitys of some of the most famous places of the USA. They are so beautiful.
CHAPTER 4: Symbols of the USA
THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
France gave the statue to the US in 1886. France did it becouse show they want to demostrate the friendship between the two countries.
It means the start of new life.
It is 93.1 m high and there are 354 steps. Her first finger is 2.44 m long.
THE AMERICAN FLAG
In 1777, government officials decided to have a flag with 13 starts and 13 stripes to represent the 13 colonies of the USA. But now there are 50 starts because there are 50 states in the USA.
THE AMERICAN EAGLE - EMBLEM OF FREEDOM
In 1782, Congress selected the bald eagle as the official emblem of US. They do it because this animal symbolise beauty, strength and long life.
During a battle, the noise woke some eagles. They flew over the fighting men, screeching loudly. The soldiers shouted "The eagles are calling for freedom!".
This chapter explains the most important datums about the most important symbols of the USA.
CHAPTER 7: Famous Americans
THE WRIGHT BROTHERS
Wilbur (1867 - 1912) Orville (1871 - 1948)
When they were childs in their free time began to test different designs of aeroplanes.
On 17th December 1903, the brothers took a plane to Kitty Hawk and empty beach in Nporth Carolina.
JOHN F. KENNEDY (JFK) (1917 - 1963)
John F. Kennedy was one of the youngest men to became President of the US.
He promised to give employment and improve their living conditions.
On 22nd November, 1963, he and his wife went in Texas and somebody fired at Kennedy and he fell forward.
MARTIN LUTHER KING - A man with a Draem
Was one of the most important civil rights leaders in the US.
His dream was live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.
In 1968, a criminal assassinated Martin Luther King in Memphis.
This main idea is the famous Americans. Each famous played an important rule inside the society.
CHAPTER 9: Sports in the USA
BASKETBALL
James Naismith was a sports teacher in Massachiusetts. He invented basketball in 1891. During winter students played this sport inside.
Today, the NBA is one of the top professional basketball leaguers and the dream for a lot of basketball players is play in it.
BASEBALL
People often called this game the national sport of the USA. To play this game you need a bat and a ball. There are 9 players for each team.
AMERICAN FOOTBALL
At first the game was so violent and some players died, but today the rules make the game safer and players wear helmets and other protective equipment.
The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League.
Basketball, baseball and football are popular sports in the USA, so this chapter talks about this sports.
CHAPTER 10: American Space Travel
In 1958, the US Governament formed the NASA.
In 1919, President Kennedy challenged NASA to send a man to the moon and return him safely to the Earth.
In1969 Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins started their journey to the moon in Apolo 11.
Amstrong on 20th 1969 became the first man to walk on the moon.
Mars Pathfinder is one space craft and Columbia and Challenger are a space shuttls.

CHAPTER 11: Myths and Legends
BIGFOOT
They are tall and they live in the forests and mountains from the US, but people didn't pay attention until 1958 when a man found enormous footprint in California. In 1967 two men filmed a bigfoot. Other people saw the same.
JOHNNY APPLESEED
He walked thousands of kilometres to plant apple trees.
These friendly boy loved animals and he was always carrying a big bag of apple seeds. He created apple orchards.
BLACKBEARD'S GHOST
In the early XVIII century a pirate called Edward Teach (Blackbeard), terrorised ships along the east coast of America for 27 months.
Some soldiers on 1718 killed Blackbear and the British leader cut his head and throw his body into the sea. The legend say that the head shouted "Come on Edwar" and the body swam three tinmes around the ship.
This chapter is the most misterious chapter of the book becouse the main idea are the legends and the myths.
CHAPTER 12: The USA Today
HOLLYWOOD
People usually think of Hollyhood as the centre of the entertainment world. People love to watch the stars walking along the red carpet and seeing the Oscar winners, so a lot of people go to Hollybood to meet these stars or simply to fulfill their dream.
HI-TECH
Many hi-tech inovations from USA changes our lives forever: Microsoft, Windows, Apple (iPhone, iPods and iPads), the way we search for information, Google maps, Facebook, Twitter.
Thanks to some of these inovations we can contact long-lost friends and family members
FOOD
A lot of Americans usually eat fast food, because it is delicious. But this time on foot has got a lot of fat and salt so it isn't healthy. Now many fast-food restaurants are selling healthier meals.
This chapter explains to us the less healthy food of these world: the fast food. It talks about tecnologhy and Hollybood too.
CHAPTER 8: Famous American Writers
MARK TWAIN (1835 - 1910)
He became a steamboat pilot and met many interesting characters on the river.
Twain wrote with humor and his books are still popular today.

He began to write with seven years old.

CHAPTER 3: The Capital of the USA
The most important ideas from chapter 3 are The White House and Washington.
The City
Washington D.C. is the capital of the USA., but before this, the capital was Philadelphia, but it wasn't in a good location.
The White House
The White House was constructed around 1792 and 1800. There are 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms. The White House is an official residence, but also very comfortable.
CHAPTER 6: American Holidays and Traditions
THANKSGIVING
The first thanksgiving was in 1621.
Their meal is usually turkey, yams, mashed potatoes, pumking pie and cranberry sauce.
The Thanksgiving Parade includes giant ballons of famous television and cartoons characters.
INDEPENDENCE DAY
The 4th of July is the birthday of the USA becouse the leadres of the new nation published the Declaration of Independence (in 1776)
Most of people don't work and there are events all over the country.
They have hamburgers, hot dogs, corn, watermelon and ice cream and as it gets dark, there are concerts and firework displays.
Americans have got very beautifool traditions and thios chapter explains some of them. It also talks about some of the Holidays of America.
CHAPTER 1: Early History of America
This chapter talks about the creation of USA and the voyage of the Mayflower.
THE VOYAGE OF THE
MAYFLOWER
The Mayflower ship, on 6th of September of 1620 started a voyage with some pilgrims. They sailed from England to America because they wanted religious and political freedom.
On 9th of November of 1620 the piligrims were near land. When they finished the journey some piligrins explore the area.
After a few months, in March 1621 the piligrins met a Native American. They taught the piligrins how to grow corn, beans and pumpkins.
By the 1750s the British had 13 colonies on the east coast of North America.
From 1754 to 1763, it was a war between the British army and French. The British won the war and get some of the French land.
On 4th July, 1776 the colonies declared independence from Great Britain.
They called the new nation USA and they signed the Treaty of Paris.

CHAPTER 2: Expansion and the Civil War
In 1803 the French Emperor Napoleon offered to sell the land to the US for $15 millons and the president exepts. By 1848 the country extended from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.
In the 1830s, the US Governament created the first Indian territory (Oklahoma). More than 15000 Cherokee people leave their homes.
The people in the north lived in towns, but in the south, they leved on plantations and own slaves. The people in the south wanted to leave the Union and had their own nation.
In 1861 there was a war between Confederate States of America and the Union.
In 1864 thousands of people were dead.
In 1865 the war endedbut more than 6000000 were dead.
The most important idea of this chapter is the expansion and the Civil War.
