Before the meeting
special program tailored to the student must be created
the parents must be contacted and notified in advanced of an IEP planning session, so they can be preset.
The IEP planning session should be scheduled at a time and location convenient for parents.
The parents, educators and other professionals who will be present at the meeting, including professionals specializing in the type of disability afflicting the child should be notified.

Building understanding with parents and students
Do not rush meeting, give time to every detail and make sure everyone understands the process
Answer every question clearly and patiently. There are no bad questions.
Reassure them that there will be active communication and they will be well informed throughout the school year.
After the meeting
If the student is in the general class either full or part time make sure all accommodations are made beforehand, and other students are informed of any needs the student has that concerns them and their actions.
Have regular meetings with the student to ensure their needs are being met.
