CHEMICAL PROPERTIES:
Reaction with compounds- CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)
-
-
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:
IT IS COLOURLESS, HAS NO ODOUR AND IS NEUTRAL.
IT IS SLIGHTLY SOLUBLE IN WATER.
DENSITY – THE DENSITY INCREASES DOWN THE GROUP WITH THE INCREASE IN ATOMIC NUMBER.
MELTING POINT AND BOILING POINT – IT SHOWS A REGULAR INCREASE DOWN THE GROUP.
Classification of Oxides
Acidic oxides, Examples: NO, CO2, SO3 + H2O → H2SO
Basic oxides: Examples: M2O3, MO2, ThO2;’ Na2O + H2O → 2NaOH
Amphoteric oxides: basic and acid characteristics: Al2O3 + 6HCl → 2Al3+ + 6Cl– + 3H2O; Al2O3 +2OH– + 3H2O → 2[Al (OH)4]–
Neutral oxides: Example: NO, CO
Uses of Oxygen
Used as an aid for breathing where problem of breathing arises.
In the oxyacetylene flame for welding and cutting steel plate
Used in the L-D process for making steel.
