epilepsy is a term used to describe the condition that is characterized by recurring spontaneous convulsions of unknown causes

causes

  • trauma such as birth injuries
  • congenital defeats of the CNS
  • inborn errors of metabolism
  • infections such as meningitis
  • hyperpyrexia
  • brain turmors
  • vascular lessions such arteriovenous anomalies
  • acidosis, hypoxia and electrolyte imbalance

pathophysiology

in epilepsy a spotaneous electrical discharge occurs from a group of neurons, refers to as seizure focus

signs and symptoms

  • loss of awareness,
  • staring or blinking
  • muscle spasms
  • repetitive movements
  • rolling eyes
  • rhythmic jerking
