SOC1 MARX
-
Critics of Marx:
-
Weber: too simplistic of a stratification: property alone is not a determinant of social class. Religion has also given rise to capitalism. Also more holistic approach to classifying and defining the criteria of social classes
-
Popper: positivist, not scientific evidence, test theories against evidence
2 criteria: specify what kind of empirical evidence would disprove it. The more it exposes itself to counter evidence the better it is. Phrased in such a way that such empirical evidence would disprove it.
-
Althuseser: law of overdetermination: economic cause is overdetermined and other factors are ignored
-
Instead of being structured into two levels, Althusser argues that society has three levels, or structures:
-
-
-
Althusser’s model, the political level and the ideological level have relative autonomy, or partial independence from the economic level, and instead of one way causality, we have two-way causality.

On class
-
classes have conflicting interests since the proletariat want higher wages while the bourgeoisie is in the pursuit of profit.
class conscience; sooner or later, the people constituting a class will mobilise and organise themselves to defend their interests.
Class in itself:
Class on an objective level, low level of consciousness when a person understands that he belongs to a particular class
Class for itself:
high level of class consciousness when a person understands that the interest of his class and that of there class is antagonistic. Will then strive to defend the intersperses of his class

Comments on essay:
Good
great first essay, providing a very accurate and complete answer to the question
have traced all the key arguments needed for answering the question, and you present them in a very well structured and logically coherent way.
Improve
just edit it mildly, so that you highlight even more your core arguments by placing them right in the introduction and at the beginning of each paragraph
Focus on industrialization throughout, building constantly on the distinction between industry under capitalism vs. industry under communism
