System: organisms and societies are both self regulating systems of independent parts that fit together. In the body these are organisms and cells but in society these are different institutions
System needs: Organisms have basic needs and functionalists see society having needs as well. For example humans having to be socialised properly in order to survive
Functions: believe that the function of any system is the contribution it makes to meeting needs for example: economy helps maintain the social system

Integration: different parts of the system must be integrated together to pursue shared goals e.g religion and media

traditional society: individuals are expected to put collective interests first, status is ascribed and they are judged by particularistic standards
modern society: pursue our individual self interest, achieve our status and are all judged by the same universalistic standards

Functionalists state that things exist because of their function. However a real explanation would identify somethings cause.
