A business is replacing its telephone support system with instant messages through their website. All messages will be monitored to prevent confidential company information getting into competitors hands.
Legal and Privacy issues:
Since it is a business strategy sharing the data or collecting it poses a great risk to the customer
Laws such as the Data Protection Act limit what kind of data is collected however it is not guaranteed to be safe.
The fact that all messages are monitored means it has great personal privacy invasion issues, an employee looking at the messages you send is very uncomfortable and is invasive.
Environmental:
Data centres use a lot of energy to run the machines. They also generate a lot of heat, which requires even more power to manage. Data centres use about 3% of the global electricity supply, and is estimated to treble in the next decade. This will have a huge impact on greenhouse gas emissions.
E - waste
Cultural: if information collected by the company is leaked it can set in danger many individuals:
- Hackers who can trick you into giving up your personal information by pretending to be someone that they are not. Spammers can send out advertisements from anonymous e-mail addresses without worrying about complaints.
