Tonsillitis and adenoiditis
Definition
Inflammation of tonsils and adenoids
Pathophysiology
-The tonsils become oedematous and hyperaemix
-white membranes forms over the tonsils
-tonsils are enlarged and infected
-cervical lymph node enlargement
-inflammed mucous membrane

Nursing management
-rest particular
-increase fluid intake
-take prescribed antibiotics
Surgical management
tonsillectomy
-adenoidectomy
oral feeding should begin once recovery is complete
-prescribed antibiotics
Clinical manifestations
-swollen throat
fever
pain when swallowing
sore throat
Causes
Peritonsillar abscess (Quinsy)
Definition
Occurs after acute tonsillar infection
Clinical manifestations
Swallowing become difficult which thickens the voice, drooling of secretions and severe local pain and fever.
Phathophysiology
affects already compromised patients . Failing to swallow liquids thickens of the voice and severe local pain and fever , the patient may present with rigors
Management
take prescribed medication
-soothing mouth wash
-liquid diet
-incision and drainage of the abscess
Perionsillar abscess (Quinsy)
Definition
Occurs after an acute tonsillar infection
Phathophysiology
Affect already compromised patients, failing to swallow liquids thickens the voice, drooling of secretions and severe local pain and fever. The patient may present with rigors
Clinical manifestations
-pain
fever
-pain when swallowing
sore throat
Management
-soothing mouth wash
-take prescribed medication
-liquid diet
-analgesics
-incision and drainage of the abscess
