The relationship between Hester and Dimmesdale, that being their forbidden passion, exemplifies this theme. It is natural to be attracted to others, and especially ones of the opposite sex, it's human nature. But during this time, human society went against the natural urges of people, and punished those that went against these norms. Society tries to withold human nature through laws and rules, trying to contain natural emotions and urges, calling them impure and against God. This is the secret battle that goes on the novel, Prynne battling the norms of society as she embraces her natural feelings and passions.
