Major functions of Digestive System
carries out the process of digestion
breaks down food
absorbs the nutrients of food
release waste from the body
Major organs of digestive system
Mouth
first portion of alimentary canal
recieves food and begins mechanical digestion by mastication
esophagus
straight collapsible food passageway leading to the stomach
has mucous that moistens and lubricates the inner lining of the tube
stomach
receives food from esophagus
mixes food with digestive juices
begins digestion of proteins
propels food to the small intestine
small intestine
receives chyme from stomach
receives pancreatic juice from pancreas and bile from the liver and gallbladder
finishes digestion of nutrients in chyme
absorb digestive end products
transports remaining residue to large intestine
large intestine
secretes mucus to help pass remaining chyme
absorb electrolytes and water
has important bacteria
anus
release feces out of body
digestive enzymes
salivary amylase
begins carbohydrate digestion by breaking down starch to disaccharides
pepsin
begins protein digestion
pancreatic amylase
breaks down starch into disaccharides
pancreatic lipase
breaks down fats to fatty acids and glycerol
proteolytic enzymes (trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypeptidase)
breaks down proteins or partially digested proteins into peptides
nucleases peptidase
breaks down nucleic acids into nucleotide and breaks down peptides into amino acids
sucrase, maltase, lactase
breaks down disaccharides into monosaccharides
intestinal lipase
breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol
enterokinase
converts trypsinogen into trypsin
Major functions of Urinary System
