disoders of external ear
ortitis externa
introduction
The term otitis externa (OE) refers to inflammation or infection of the external auditory canal. In older adults, it can range from a moderate inflammation to a potentially
life-threatening condition known as necrotizing otitis externa. A detailed understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the external ear canal, as well as knowledge of relevant microbiology and clinical presentation, is essential for an accurate and timely diagnosis of the otitis externa continuum. The most common infection of the external auditory canal is acute (diffuse) otitis externa. It's also referred to as "swimmer's ear," "tropical ear," or "Singapore ear.")
definition
Refers to an infection of the ear canal, the tube leading from the outside opening of the ear in towards the ear drum.
pathophysiology
-
Is a painful condition caused when irritating or infective agents come into contact with the skin of the external ear
-
signs and symptoms
-
-
Pain tenderness or pulling of the pinna, redness or itching of the skin lining of the ear
-
causes
-
Seborrhoeic demartitis - a common skin condition where the naturally greasy areas of your skin become irritated and inflammed, which can sometimes affect the ears
-
A middle ear infection (ortitis media) - discharge produced by an infection deeper in the ear can sometimes lead to ortitis externa
nursing intervention
-
Warm the ear drops by holding them in your hands for a few minutes as cold ear drops can make you feel dizzy
Encourage a patient to remove anything from affected ear that may cause an allergic reaction, such as hearing aid, ear plugs and earrings

conclusion
Otitis media is a a significant problem for families and health care providers alike. A childs pain, hearing loss, and vertigo can be extremely disturbing for an effected family. Physicians are therefore under great pressure to provide treatment. Nurses are in an ideal position to reinforce family education about the treatment options and etiology of OM. Families can be helped to weigh the risks and benefits of pain control and watchful waiting versus surgical and/or antibiotic therapy. Families need to be reassured that in most cases the symptoms will begin to subside within 24 to 72 hours with or without treatment. They also need to be reminded that their child will very likely experience OM more than once and that unnecessary antibiotic therapy can increase the risk of colonization by antibiotic resistant bacteria.

pericondritis
-
Introduction
Perichondritis is inflammation of the perichondrium, a layer of connective tissue which surrounds cartilage, A common form, auricular perichondritis (perichondritis auriculae) involves infection of the pinna due to infection of traumatic or surgical wound or the spread of inflammation into depth (eg. Infected transcartilaginous ear piercings)
Pathophysiology
Perichondritis is an infection of the perichondrium, a tough, fibrous tissue layer that surrounds the cartilage and shapes the pinna
This tissue supplies blood to the ear cartilage. Infection can be caused by opening an area of pus or localized infection
