Cystic formations, containing secreted mucin collections mainly produced by minor salivary glands and the sublingual gland.
Aetiology
Mucous retention

Slowly enlarging, painless, fluctuant

Mucous escape reaction

Traumatism, nibble, repeated

Blue, raised soft tissue
swelling

clinical features
Asymptomatic, or mild symptomatology

Location: lower lip, buccal mucosa, tongue and palate.
Fluctuant, depending on the size.
Discomfort, it can interferer with mastication and speaking.

treatment
Elliptical/ Oval incision across the mucosa, avoid the break of the capsule, to assure the complete elimination of the material, sutured by simple stiches.

Differential diagnosis
Benign tumours; lipoma, lymphangioma...

Ranula
CLINICAL FEATURES
Location: floor of the mouth, limited medially by the lingual fraenum.

It may crosses the middle line, occupying the whole floor of the mouth.

If crosses the mylohyoid muscle, " Plunging ranula”

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS
Benign tumours; lipoma, lymphangioma
