Rust suspects she was a sex worker. While she has some signs of makeup, she also has signs of regular drug use.
Because the killing has ritual elements, Rust thinks it isn't personal. He thinks the killer targetted her because he could, not because he hated her specifically.
Sci-fi
Some sci-fi tech, but not enough to distract or confuse the audience. The limited tech helps the show feel less unrealistic.
Automatic cars
Very few
Some styling of products
ADIs
Sci-fi surveillance
Sci-fi Environmental purpose based on real-world worries and concerns.
Metaphor
Like lots of science-fiction, the episode uses a metaphor to discuss a real world issue. The bees act as metaphor for the internet, its capability for violence and how hard it is to stop.
Sci-fi has a long history of using metaphors to discuss real world worries. 'Frankenstein' is actually about the fear of a less religious society. 'Terminator' is about a fear of automation and the loss of individual impact. Robocop was about the fear of unrestrained capitalism. Starship Troopers is about facisism.
Detective Fiction
Both shows focus on detectives
Both shows focus on murders
Both shows encourage view speculation(guessing)
Gothic
Realistic/verisimilitude
Focus on police work
Lack of exaggeration
Some more depressing elements
A bit of downer
less clues, more difficult to solve
slow
flawed detectives
focus on the sadness of the victim's death
Somethings aren't realistic
A lot more focus on the victim
the crime is portrayed quite horribly. The show takes time to describe the crime in a way that the viewer can understand(and thus be horrorifed by)
It is also potrayed as more personally motivated. The killer does this for their personal enjoyment.
devil nets: the appear creepy and seem like they will be a meaningful symbol or piece of foreshadowing. Maybe meant to look like shrike victims or owl pellets
Do you think you would have used the "#Deathto"?
