OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST FOR RESEARCH
EXTRANEOUS VARIABLES
Situational variables
BACKGROUND NOISE
Impact on data
- Due to other classes operating at the same time the experiment was conducted, and the walls not being sound proof, it may have caused distractions for the participants. Having distractions leads to a change in results as their focus may have drifted towards the noises happening outside of the experiment.
TIME OF DAY
Impact on data
- The time of day this experiment was conducted was in the middle of the day which is when participants would be the most exhausted, as it is the middle of the day and their brains will have been exhausted and tired out, especially after lunch.
Participant variables
EMOTIONAL STATE
Impact on data
- The emotional state of participants can largely impact the data as they may be unable to focus on the task at hand because they are anxious about something else and will not be in the correct emotional state to correctly complete the experiment.
GENDER
Impact on data
- The participant's genders can impact the data as there is an uneven amount of males and females, there being 27 female participants and only 11 participants, making the results uneven and unfair.
SAMPLE SIZE
2 STAGE 1 PSYCHOLOGY CLASSES (38 PARTICIPANTS)
Potential problems
- Because the results were only from 38 participants not a larger range of results were analysed with only around 12-13 participants in each group. Not giving a larger number of results to analyse from.
RESEARCH DESIGN TYPE
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN (THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE IS MANIPULATED THROUGH THE USE OF EMOTIONAL AROUSAL
Potential problems (advantages & disadvantages)
- Because there were 3 groups and was a clear separation of the controlled group (group 1) and experimental group (group 2 & 3) allowed an easier comparison between the groups and created more accurate results.
Other extraneous variables could have manipulated and changed the results of the dependent variable. The experiment itself was not something that could be applied to real-life situations.
DEPENDANT VARIABLE
NUMBER OF WORDS RECALLED ACCURATELY
Potential problems (advantages & disadvantages)
- Because each group was given the same amount of words they were given a fair change at trying to remember all the words.
The number of accurate words recalled does not explain and show evidence of emotional arousal being present in group 3.
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
AMOUNT OF EMOTIONAL AROUSAL THAT IS PRESENT IN EACH GROUP
Potential problems
- Because each group had the same words, but were presented to the participants with more or less emotion. Emotional arousal could have still been triggered in group 1, and will have had a high change of being triggered in group 2. Which could cause a clash in results.
