evaluation of the multi store model
research support
there is support showing that the STM and the LTM are different
Baddeley (1966) = found we tend to mix up words that sound similar when using our short term memory
when we use our LTM we mix up words that have a similar meaning
these studies show that the STM and LTM are separate and independent stores.
Counterpoint - everyday life
eg. names, faces, places
many of the studies however use none of these materials
the memories that we form in everyday life relate to all sorts of useful things
they use letters and numbers that often have no meaning to the ppts
this means the MSM may not be a valid model of how the model works in everyday life when we have to remember meaningful memory
more than one store for the STM
KF had a memory disorder called amnesia
KF's STM for digits was very poor when they were read out loud to him
Shallice and Warrington (1970)
his recall was much better when he read the digits to himself
MSM is wrong in claiming that there is just one STM store processing different types of information
elaborative rehearsal
In the MSM the amount of rehearsal matters, the more you rehearse something the more likely it is to transfer to the LTM
Craik and Watkins found that the type of rehearsal is more important
prolonged rehearsal is not needed to transfer info to the LTM
elaborative rehearsal = when you link the new info to something you already know
this means that info can be transferred into the LTM without prolonged rehearsal
