Multi store model of memory
Diagram..
the model is made up of three stores linked by processing
Atkinson and Shiffrin - 1968, 1971
describes how info flows through the memory store
Sensory register
there are several registers - one for each sense
the coding in each store is modality specific
haptic store = tactile info (touch)
Olfactory = smells
iconic store = visual info
echoic store = auditory info
all stimuli from the environment pass into the sensory register
duration is very brief - less than half a second
high capacity
information only passes to the memory system if you pay attention to it
short term memory
coded mainly acoustic
info lasts around 18 seconds unless rehearsed
limited capacity, it can only contain a certain number of 'things' before forgetting occurs ( 7 +/- 2)
Maintenance rehearsal
occurs when we repeat material to ourselves over and over again
we can keep the info in our STM as long as we rehearse it
if we rehearse it enough then it passes into our long term memory
long term memory
permanent memory store
coded mostly semantically
duration may be up to a lifetime - Bahrick et al. 1975 (school photos)
when we want to recall info from the LTM, it has to be transferred back to the STM. this is called retrieval
