NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF FLUOROSIS (NPPCF)
Centre will bear 75% of the total budget
and the
State Government will contribute 25%
of the budget. In case of North
Easrtern States it will be 90% and 10% respectively
.
To address the problem of
fluorosis
, mainly due to intake of high fluoride through drinking water
was initiated in
2008-09
during 11th Five Year Plan
100 district with high fluoride
content in drinking water were covered under the programme during the
11th Plan in phased manner
and another
95 are to be covered during the 12th Plan.
The strategies are :
Surveillance
of fluorosis in the community and school children;
capacity building
in the form of training and man power support;
diagnostic facilities
in the form of laboratory support & equipment including ion meter to monitor the fluoride content in water and urinary levels;
health education
;
management of fluorosis
cases by providing for corrective surgeries and rehabilitation
All people residing in areas with h
igh fluoride content in drinking water in the districts
covered so far under the programme .

Objectives
:To collect, assess and use the baseline survey data of fluorosis of Ministry
of Drinking Water Supply for starting the project
Comprehensive management of fluorosis in the selected areas;
Capacity building for prevention, diagnosis and management of fluorosis cases
The programme commenced implementation in
100 endemic districts in 17 States/UTs
in
a phased manner during the
11th Five Year Pla
n.
In
. 2008-09 6 districts
were selected from
each of the 6 zones of the country based
on information collected from Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation
Strategy
Capacity building (Human Resource )
Surveillance of fluorosis in the community including school children
Establishment of diagnostic facilities in the district/ medical hospitals:
Management of fluorosis cases including treatment, surgery, rehabilitation:
Expected Outcome
a) Number of fluorosis cases managed and rehabilitated in the programme districts
b) Capacity for laboratory testing for fluoride in water, urine to be developed.
c) Trained health sector manpower in Government set up for measuring fluoride in urine and water
d) Improve information base for the community and all concerned in the programme districts.
