Tonsillitis and adenoiditis
Definition
Are the infection and adenoids,it is most common in children.
Pathophysiology
The pathogenesis of adenoiditis is characterized by its inflammation
This process is primarily due to an elevated rate of trafficking of lymphocytes into adenoid from the blood
exceeding the rate of outflow from the adenoid
The persistence of tonsillitis beyond 3 months is known as chronic tonsillitis
This infection may be secondary to upper respiratory tract infection
The tonsils become oedematous and hyperaemic
A thin white membrane that peels away easily without bleeding
There is discharge from the crypts of the tonsil
In chronic tonsillitis,is when tonsils are enlarged and infected
This may cause nasal obstruction,and neck and cervical lymph node enlargement
Clinical manifestation
Throat pain
Difficulty in swallowing
Otalgia
Snoring
Fever :
Generalised malaise
Causes
Streptococcus
Haemophilus influenza
Nursing intervention
Encourage patient to rest particularly in acute phase.
Increase fluid intake
Saline gargles and prescribed broad spectrum antibiotics may be used to treat acute tonsillitis
Surgical management where they remove tonsils and adenoids called tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.
It is done under general anesthesia mostly in children.
Surgical intervention is contraindicated in acute upper respiratory tract infections and haemotological disorders.
