Digestive & Urinary System - Coggle Diagram
Digestive & Urinary System
Major Functions of the Digestive System
Digestion
Mechanical
- breaks down food into smaller pieces
Chemical
- breaks down larger nutrient molecules into smaller ones
Mixing Movements- when smooth muscles contract in mall sections of tube
Propelling Movements- ring of concentration in portion of the tube while relaxation occurs ahead
Major Functions of the Urinary System
Major Organs of Digestive System
Alimentary Canal
- muscular tubes that pass through thoracic and abdominal cavities
Mucosa Layer
- inner layer that surrounds lumen of tube; protects tissues and carries on secretion/absorption
Submucosa
- under muscosa; nourishes layers of canal; vessels transport absorbed nutrients
Muscularis
- propels food through canal
Serosa
- secrete serous fluid to reduce friction of organs
Mouth
- begins digestion by chewing; first part of alimentary canal
Cheeks- form walls in mouth involved with chewing
Lips - surround mouth opening; detect textures and temperature of food
Tongue - muscular organ composed of skeletal muscle; contain taste buds
Palate - roof of oral cavity; uvula closes nasal cavity during swallowing
Teeth - break down food into smaller pieces; 22 primary teeth and secondary
Salivary Glands - secrete saliva, dissolve food, cleanse mouth and teeth
Pharynx
- connects nasal and oral cavities
Esophagus
- food passageway leading to stomach' extends downward to diaphragm; produce mucus to moisten tube
Stomach
- muscular organ in left abdominal quadrant; receives and mixes food with digestive juices; moves food to intestines
Cardiac
; near opening to esophogus
Fundus
: region superior to cardia
Body Region
: main portion of the stomach
Pylourus
: near small instestine
Pyloric Sphincter
: muscular ring that controls release of food to small intestine
Liver
- responsible for the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids & proteins; filters blood; secretion
Gallbladder
- stores and concentrates bile
Small Intestine
- receives chyme, pancreatic juice and bile; finishes digestion of nutrients
Major Organs of Urinary System
Digestive Enzymes
Gastric Cells
mucus cells
protect mucus lining
Chief Cells
secrete pepsin to digest protein
Parietal Cells
secrete hydrochloric acid required for vitamin adsorption
Chyme
is a mixture of food and gastric juice; enters small intestine in small amounts
V
omiting cente
r controls reflex
Pancreatic Juice
Pancreatic Amylase
break starch into disscharrides
Pancreatic Lipase
break down triglycerides to fatty acids to
Trypsin, Chymotripsyn, Carboxypeptidase
