It was from a point of view of a Vietnam veteran returning home only to witness injustice, human suffering and other unfair treatments. It also talked about the Vietnam war, drug abuse and poverty. These were big topics back in the days and even now. The lyrics were also very deep, for example, 'Everybody think we're wrong, but who are they to judge us, simply cause our hair is long?' It was as if it's telling no one is wrong and we shouldn't judge others. It's all just from different people perspective.
