The Luddities, 1812-15
Reasons: machines were introduced in industries which replaced Cropper workers
Outcomes: mills were burned, machines were smashed, mill owners were attacked, small number killed
Gov reactions: army rounded up men and charged over 60 men with crimes in connection
Success: very effective, key steps towards the Industrial Revolution (making wages increase, conditions better)
Spa Field Riot 1816
Reasons: end of the Napoleonic wars 1815 led to mass unemployment, distress, sharp slump in British economy
Outcomes: speech made by a famous radical 'Henry Hunt', 2 Spenceans rallied a crowd into breaking into gunsmith's shop for weapons, marching towards the Tower of London, riot broke out
Gov reactions: many were arrested and charged with high treason
Aims: lower taxes, reform of Parliament
Success: start of the mass anti-government meetings
The march of the Blanketeers 1817
Gov reactions: magistrates sent troops, broken up violently, leaders imprisoned
Reasons: aimed to draw attention to unemployed sinners and weavers, high level taxation, trade situation
Success: nothing came of the petition handed
Outcomes: aimed to present a petition to Prince Regent, 300 protesters marched, peaceful, seen as a threat, one man killed and several wounded
Aims: demanded abolition of Corn Laws, reintroduction of Habeas Corpus, parliamentary reform
The Pentrich Rising 1817
Reasons: government used spies and found a discontented group of workers part of a massive uprising
Outcomes: 200 men marched to Nottingham, included stocking-makers, iron workers and farm labourers, armed with pikes scythes pitch forks and a few guns
Gov reactions: when they arrived they were greeted by troops, 45 men were tried for high treason, three were hanged and thirty were transported
Success: it was swiftly and brutally supressed
Aims: attempted an uprising against the government following economic hardship from the France wars
