Duncan
Duncan lives in America, but is Asian. Duncan is a dropout in many programs, but is a foreign expert. Duncan was assigned with Professor Mo at the institute. Duncan had an ex-girlfriend called Alice.
Louise
Louise has a small, slim figure. She had 2 husbands.
Mo
Mo is a professor who is a haggard man and in his 50s. He usually walks with one hand swinging around him, like he's doing a one armed breaststroke. Mo used to smoke, and it got so bad that he had to get an "operation" on his lung. Mo is Duncan's "supervisor" and "partner". He is the head of the "english-language program at the coal mining institute".
William
He is a square-headed, square bodied man, who is very strong, as he dug himself out of a building after an earthquake. He is also a student in the institute.
Arnie
He is an entrepreneur, started an import-export buisness, part of the middle to upper class as he drives a BMW convertable. He is also Duncan's brother, and has a girlfriend from Hong Kong.
Setting
Within the book, China is said to be a place where the main character Duncan travels to know more about the country, and its heritage. In the book, Duncan mentions "The China of the scholar-officials, the China of ineffable nobility and restraint."
Duncan, Louise and William were in Shandong, climbing Tai Shan, which appears to be have a "sheer mountain face". As it was mentioned in the book, "The trip to Tai Shan started off magically."
