The United States of Frankenstein: Juxtaposing Frankenstein to the social climate of America in 1818, Young points out how Frankenstein can represent enslaved black men and women. One particular comparison she make that I found interesting was the relation to Nat Turner's slave rebellion. Having previously read his statement I agree with Young, the way Turner is depicted, despite us understanding why, is as if it was unnecessarily barbarous, as he too killed women and children. I disagree, although the death of the innocent is not something I condone, having the knowledge of how terribly they were treated, their frustration was in proportion. Overall I feel young is trying to make a statement on how despite having knowledge, there is no guarantee of human decency. Even now, with an infinite amount of knowledge sitting in our pockets (i.e phones) we still have major issues such as racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, homophobia, etc.
