Los Temas de la Película

Guerra, codicia e inocencia perdida
Rich vs poor
-
Meanwhile, those at the top i.e. Vidal & his followers indulge & live in a completely opposite world
E.g. banquet scene- very ironic, they all sit surrounded by signs of wealth e.g. nice furniture, lots of food whilst discussing the rationing system- clear show of greed & ignorace
Ofelia eating food at the 2nd task- represents the hunger of the poor of Spain & how they wouldn't have had access to food in the pale man's lair postwar
War
-
Pale man's lair- a pile of shoes can be seen, these represent the lost innocence & deaths caused by the civil war (spoils of war)
Greed
-
Both are unwilling to share, similar to Vidal
Ofelia
Poisons Vidal- shows her succumbing to violence, losing her innocence & purity, indicating she has been changed by war & the horrors surrounding her
Her death at the end- blood spilt opens the portal, indicates the part of her purity & innocence which was still intact despite everything she went through

El Género
-
Vidal's show of sexism
-
Perdonen a mi mujer, no ha visto mucho mundo, ¿saben? Cree que a todos nos interesan estas tonterías- Vidal

given a dress to wear for the banquet so she looks pretty for Vidal- shows that a woman's sole purpose at the time was to look nice for men & society
Carmen's death- timing of her death (after giving birth) reflects how there is no use for her anymore, her role as a woman (to provide an heir/child) is complete
