THE ROLE OF IDEOLOGY: Marxists believe that the media creates false class-consciousness,
THE MEDIA AND IDEOLOGY: Miliband (1973) - Conservative and conformist ideology comes across as fact in the media.
Tunstall and Palmer (1991) - Government not interested in
controlling media because of ‘regulatory favours’.
THE THREE KEY APPROACHES:
1) The manipulative approach (also called the instrumental approach) - Associated with traditional Marxism.
2) The hegemonic approach - Associated with neo-Marxism 3) The pluralist approach - Associated with pluralism (obviously).
