- - - - This groups was called the National Socialist German Workers' Party or Nazis.
      - They were the German brand of Fascism known as Nazism- Their symbol was a hooked cross and they were known as the 'brown shirts'
    - - Hitler and the Nazis hoped to gain power in Munich. However, Hitler was arrested and sentenced 5 years in prison. He only served less than 9 months.
        
        While in jail, he wrote Mein Kampf. This book was written by Hitler to set forth the goals and beliefs of Germany.
        
        What did Hitler believe were the rights and duties of the German master race?- The master race was also known as the Aryans. He said the non-Aryan race such as Jews, Slavs, and Gypsies were the ones who he claimed as inferior. He said the Versailles Treaty was outrageous and that Germany needed regain their lands.
        
        Genocide- As we all know, this would be considered a Genocide because Hitler will be taking out most people under a certain religion, race, or political/ cultural group.

        After being let out of prison, Hitler was able to reorganize the Nazi party.
        
        Most people ignored him until The Great Depression ended their nations postwar recovery.
        
        The Great Depression worked in Hitler's favor because the German people were scared and looking for a strong leader who could improve their lives.
        
        Many were scared because the American loans stopped and Germany's economy was collapsing. So, they turned to Hitler
        
        Hitler also claimed that Germany was over crowded and needed more lebensraum or 'living space'.

        Hitler uses his power to create totalitarian state. Banned all other political parties and had opponents arrested
        
        Nazi secret police or SS (schutzstaffel) were created. In 1934 they arrest & murdered hundreds of Hitler's enemies. Brutal actions and terror from the Gestapo made german totally obedient.
        
        Nazis took command of economy, transportation, & technology. New laws banned strikes, labor unions, & gave government authority over business & labor. Hitler put germans to work in factories, building highways, making weapons, & served in the military. Unemployed numbers dropped from 6 million to 1.5 million in 1936

        Totalitarianism: Hitler used the power that he had gained to create a totalitarianism government and have control over public and private life in Germany.
  - - - Hitler believed continuous struggle brought victory to the strong, he twisted philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche to support use of brutal force.

  - - - Jews were less than 1% of population and used as Nazis scapegoat for Germany's problems since the war. Led to a wave of anti-semitism across Germany. In 1933 nazis passed laws depriving Jews of most of their rights. Violence against them increased.
        
        November 9,1938, event called Kristallnacht (night of the broken glass) Nazis attacked Jews in their home and destroyed thousands of Jewish owned buildings. Signaled the start of elimination of Jews from German life called Final Solution, later became known as Holocaust. 6 million jews would die during holocaust
        
        What does Kristallnacht demonstrate about the power of the Nazis? This event shows that the nazi party was able to get away with anything because of the fear they had put into their people.
