Explorer used to manage files and folders: divided into left (navigation) pane and right pane; Details view is most useful- can customize which details are shown, and sort drive / folder contents; folder structures can be and collapsed.
File Path
the 'sequence' of folders, starting from the drive letter and separated by /, that lead to the location of a specific file
consists of 3 parts- name, dot and extension
Planning a logical folder structure
Network drives
File names
actually folders on another computers on the network, given drive letters such as S,T,U,etc
First plan the main folders, then add subfolders
When there are too many files in one folders, subdivide into further subfolders
Name- letters, special characters, digits, spaces.
Use meaningful names for folders and files
Recycling Bin
Extension- indicates what type of file it is and what program should be used to open it. Never change the file extension of an existing- the operating system may try to load it with a program other than the one that is meant to use. Use Open with command to try to open file using a different program.
holds files deleted from local drive (not network drives or removable drives), and can be used to restore deleted files to their original locations
Shortcuts
Can be created to point to any file, folder or other resource. A shortcut only points to the original item - it is not the item itself
Convert file types
use Save As and then Save As Type to convert a file to another type
