Volcanic eruptions
Preparedness
-
-
-
-
-
-
Have a safe shelter in place for example like a shelter in high areas as the lava flows won't be able to reach.
-
Response
If forced to be outside, use a dusk mask/cloth to prevent inhaling the fumes.
Try to be inside during the volcanic eruption, as the pyroclastic flow is toxic and will kill people if inhaled too much.
Lava flows rarely will kill people, because they move slowly, meaning people have time to get out of the way, meaning people should worry more about the pyroclastic flow.
If trapped in a dark place, use a flashlight to locate where you are, and use emergency food and water if trapped for too long, while waiting for rescuers.
If practiced before, follow the community's evacuation plan to ensure the safety of people.
Use water that has already been filtered before the eruption, incase volcanic ashes has contaminated the water supply in the area.
Try to stay calm and not panic, as when you are calm, you will have a clearer mind and know what to do.
Recovery
-
When it is safe, dispose and clean any ash falls near your house.
After the volcanic eruption, if there are ash in the water supply try to not use dishwasher or washing machine. (Volcanic ashes are harmful to people)
If practiced before, use a recovery plan discussed by the community to safely move away to another location.
If you need to go outside after the eruption, use a gas mask and goggles to prevent any further contact with volcanic ashes.
Insurance companies will provide coverage for property loss caused by the eruption any damage that is caused from the explosion or fire of the eruption is also covered by the company.
However, if the building next to your property collapses to your property as a result of the eruption, the insurance will be more complicated.
