WHAT IS TB?
TB was the biggest killer in the 19th century said to account for 1/3 deaths. However, may be less as was often confused with lung cancer and chronic bronchitus.
SPREAD- Because it was a respiratory disease spread due to overcrowding and poor ventilation.
-Prevalent among the urban working classes.
LOCAL ACTION AGAINST TB
ACTION IN OLDHAM
-In Oldham local medical officer ordered the leafleting of all houses , stressing that TB was highly infectious and could be transmitted by spit. It forbade spitting in public places and advised the burning of all handerchiefs.
ACTION IN BRIGHTON
local officer in Brighton took similar measures, but also provided spitting bowls.
GOVERNMENT ACTION
CENTRAL GOVERNMENT ACTION: 1922, ministry of health ordered the pasteurisaiton of milk stopping the spread of TB.
