Pharynx(throat)
- cavity lying posterior to the mouth
Esophagus-
muscular tube leading from pharynx to stomach
nasopharynx
- top portion, air passage behind the nasal cavity
oropharynx
- middle portion, the passageway for food and hair
laryngopharynx
- bottom portion, the passageway to the esophagus
Esophagus
collapsible food passageway leading to the stomach
Lower esophageal( cardiac, cardiosophageal) sphincter
helps prevent regurgitation of the stomach contents into the esophagus
Stomach
a j-shaped muscular organ in the upper left abdominal quadrant receives food from the esophagus, mixes food with digestive juices, digestion of proteins, propels food to the small intestine

- breaks down starch into disaccharides

- break down nucleic acids into nucleotides
